The Police Department provides basic patrol services, handles the investigating and apprehension of suspects involved in criminal activities, and provides the necessary administrative and support functions to keep the department running. It is involved in all aspects of safety, particularly traffic safety, in the Town. This was attested in November 1991, when the Town was recognized by then Governor Wilder for twenty-one (21) years without a pedestrian fatality. This record remains unbroken today.

The Police Department possesses and utilizes a robot in educating citizens of Tazewell County in seat-belt safety. The Department has implemented computerized dispatch, submitting incident base reporting on-line to the state offices.The Police Department has 15 Sworn Officers, one K-9 Police Dog, one Administrative Assistant to the Chief, 5 Dispatchers, and 1 Crossing Guard / Parking Attendant.

 

At the present we have 9 cruisers and the detective's vehicle. A van, which is used as a transit bus, has also been donated to the department. Our cruisers are equipped with in-car video cameras to tape car stops and road incidents. The department has purchased an ATV for Search and Seizure incidents. We also have Video Magistrate equipment at the department to present people before the magistrate via television and fax.
